A Tribute To Major Walter B. Sanderson, Jr. U.S. Army 1942 to 1964 Buffalo Soldier 1942 to 1945 Play Drum Cadence Major Walter B. Sanderson, Jr. 1921 - 2017 Born on March 20, 1921 at Washington, D.C. Major Walter B. Sanderson, Jr. was an American Hero. But he was much, much more. He was also an accomplished student. He was one of two salutatorians who received the grade of A in every class but one. As an Cadet in the Dunbar High School Cadet Corps, Major Sanderson was one of two students to attain the rank of Major. In 1937 Major Sanderson won a scholarship to attend Howard University by attaining the highest score on a scholarship examination offered by The Washington News (Washington, D.C.). He majored in Mathematics and minored in Physics. Major Sanderson was the highest ranking cadet in the Howard University ROTC Program when graduated with a B.S. degree in 1941. In early 1942 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the segregated 25th Infantry Regiment, 93rd Division. The 25th Infantry Regiment is one of the four U.S. Army Regiments that served with distinction and valor during the Indian Wars. Major Walter B. Sanders, Jr. was a Buffalo Soldier.
